Genre juggling: balancing diverse styles in photography

An interview with Oliver Beneš

Tell us about you - where are you based, how has your photography journey started?

My name is Oliver Beneš, and I'm a freelance photographer based in Průhonice, Czech Republic—my hometown. Photography, to me, is more than a profession. It is a passion that allows me to perceive the world with a fresh perspective. I cherish every opportunity to capture the beauty of life and share those moments with others. My portfolio is diverse, covering subjects like weddings, couples, family gatherings, events, and even cats, but landscapes hold a special place in my heart—they are the cornerstone of my photographic journey.

The start of the journey dates back to childhood when I borrowed a compact camera from my parents during holiday travels. I enjoyed experimenting with different settings and pushing the limits of what was possible with the little camera. Later, at the end of primary school, I discovered a photography school while randomly flipping through a magazine. I decided to give it a go. It was something I was interested in, and although it was a leap into the unknown, something drew me to it.

During high school, various assignments kept us engaged in photography. Alongside these, I actively photographed landscapes and the night sky in my free time, creating my own collection. I was mostly self-taught, relying on books and the internet as my primary sources of information. As high school was coming to an end, I knew one thing for sure - I didn't want to continue with mere studies. I wanted to try creating something I would enjoy and dedicate myself to it. So, I took another leap into freelancing, somewhat recklessly, and even though it was a risky move, I saw it as a natural challenge to overcome. It paid off.
