Beyond the expected

How surprise makes photos more powerful by Ana Lyubich

We’ve just wrapped up another round of the Unlocking the Secrets to Captivating Images course, and once again, I’m deeply moved by what the participants created. The photographs shared in this issue carry more than visual appeal. They reveal thought, emotion, and that quiet pull that makes you stop mid-scroll or linger just a moment longer.

The images come from different moments. Some were captured during the course, while others were drawn from personal archives. But together, they offer a striking truth: the most compelling photography often emerges not from technical mastery alone, but from a photographer’s ability to be present, observant, and in tune with their own inner world. It’s this sensitivity that transforms an image into something truly captivating.

The beauty of the unexpected

Throughout the course, we explored a range of ideas that shape how photographs resonate with viewers. One concept in particular, expectation violation theory, deserves a special mention. It’s a simple yet profound idea from psychology: when we encounter something that disrupts what we anticipate, our attention sharpens. We become more alert, more curious, more emotionally engaged.
